Visitors to the Four Freedoms Park memorial to Franklin Delano Roosevelt will soon encounter a statue of FDR seated in a wheelchair just north of the park.
The FDR Hope Memorial – a project of the Roosevelt Island Disabled Association (RIDA) – took a step closer to completion when the committee responsible for its development viewed and approved the sculptor’s full scale-model at her Long Island City studio last week.
The memorial shows FDR reaching out to a young girl with a brace on her leg and crutches under her arm – encouraging her to overcome her polio-induced disability, much as he himself had done. Meredith Bergman, the sculptor, plans to work next on the wax version, and then to bring the latter to a foundry for the creation of the final bronze statue. Committee Chair Marc Diamond believes the unveiling will take place in late fall of 2016.
