Roosevelt Island was front and center at City Council Member Ben Kallos’ 2016 State of the District event on January 10th. Kallos commended PS/IS 217 and Girl Scout troop leaders Janine Schaefer, and Aiesha Eleusizov, for winning his Council district’s 2015 Participatory Budget Vote. The prize was $500,000 dollars towards the school’s STEM Green Roof Project. There were loud cheers when Principal Beckman and PTA president Olga Shchuchinov were mentioned with PS/IS 217 students and the Brownies and Girl Scouts from troops 3001, 3244 and 3245 for their winning efforts. Photos of Roosevelt Islanders and PS/IS 217 were also displayed on the big screen. The hour long event was attended by the Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright, Senator Liz Krueger, and Comptroller Scott Stringer. The Manhattan Borough President also awarded the STEM Green Roof project an additional $250,000 in 2015.
