50 Pre-K Slots Open Up at Day Nursery

Roosevelt Island Day Nursery (RIDN) will be a full-day UPK [Universal Pre-K] provider next year. "Children with a 2012 date of birth are eligible to attend school at RIDN 8:40 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, for free, during the 2016-2017 school year,” RIDN Director Pamela Stark said via email on the Roosevelt Island Parents’ Network (RIPN) early Monday morning. Eva Bosbach, RIPN Coordinator, said, “It is fantastic news that Roosevelt Island is getting 50 additional UPK seats, making it a total of 86 UPK seats available to our families starting this September!”

Cherry Blossom Fest Expands, Thrives

The fifth annual Cherry Blossom Festival, held Saturday April 30, attracted between 2500 and 3000 attendees at multiple locations, on the plaza at Manhattan Park, Gallery RIVAA, along the promenade, and at Island Wine & Spirits.

Islander Joins Green Berets

On April 21, 2016, Capt. Daniel Schiering was among the 108 graduates of the Army Special Forces Qualifying Course and entitled to wear the distinctive Green Beret. The graduation ceremony was held at Ft. Bragg, N.C., the home of the Army’s Special Forces training center and was the culmination of two years of extremely rigorous mental and physical challenges, with less than half of those who started able to finish the course.
