Laila Amatullah-Jaliyl passed away August 3.
She was born
Hildegarde Bess in Harlem on October 7, 1944. She was widowed
in 1975 and raised her three
children, Sean, Tyree and Tanjy.
She went on to earn her Bachelors
of Science from John Jay College
and a Masters in Social Work
from New York University. She
had open-heart surgery, and beat
breast cancer twice, and was also
a pancreatic cancer surivor, for
which she cited holistic medicine.
She worked at the Department of
Human Resources for over 20
years until her retirement in 2009.
Laila was founder of the Roosevelt
Island Women’s Health
group. She was a beautiful, proud, strong woman who loved
being a sister of three, mother of three, grandmother of 17 and
great grandmother of one. Amatullah has been recognized
many times for her service to her community. She was a great
poet, artist, and an amazing cook, and she will be missed.
