To the Editor:

Parents of children born in 2012 have until January 13 to apply for kindergarten. With so many options in the City, the process can feel overwhelming. I encourage you to check out our own excellent public school right here on Roosevelt Island, PS/IS 217. In addition to strong academics, the school offers something many of its peers can’t: a strong connection to the wonderful community here on the Island.

When your five-year-old joins the PS 217 school family, they benefit from the quality of life that keeps so many of us here on Roosevelt Island: easy commutes, strong friendships with Island neighbors, and a community that embraces diversity.

In my seven years on the Island, I’ve watched PS 217 grow and develop under the leadership of Principal Mandana Beckman and the team she’s brought together. The faculty works to guide our students to think critically and creatively, not only in core academic subjects and enrichments, but also in computer science and coding – content you’re not likely to find in other NYC public schools.

We also have the benefit of a small community, all working together for a stronger school. It won’t be long before this incoming class is learning on the school’s new green roof, which is being built thanks to the efforts of so many Islanders.

PS 217 will welcome 100 kindergarteners and their families in the fall. It will be exciting and emotional – and yet another thing that endears you to this Island. Nowhere else can we have this.

Erin Olavesen

President, PS/IS 217 PTA
