It’s show season at Main Street Theatre & Dance Alliance (MST&DA), my favorite and busiest time of year. From the outside, you may not see all the hours put into each of these productions, but the work starts the minute we end the previous year’s shows. Between picking the shows, hiring staff, starting classes, holding auditions and rehearsals, building sets, and so much more, there is a lot of work by many people put into these productions.
This doesn’t even include the annual Dance Concert in June, for which teachers and students train and learn choreography for months.
It takes a village! But the cause – our students and Island community – is well worth all the time put into each one of these productions.
Main Street Theatre & Dance Alliance is dedicated to their mission statement, “to nourish creativity by providing high-quality theatrical and dance training as well as performing opportunities to everyone in our diverse community.” We truly believe the benefits of arts education and performance should be accessible to everyone regardless of age, or cultural, socio-economic or ethnic background.
The advantages of the performing arts to individuals, and the part the arts play in enhancing a community, are innumerable. Benefits to students include improved self-esteem, being quick thinkers, conquering fears in a safe environment, learning to express emotions and emotional well-being, memory skills, perseverance, and discipline. Benefits to a community include enhanced community pride and attractiveness, job opportunities, increased neighborhood diversity, and the connection of people and organizations in a mutually enjoyable experience.
I can personally attest to all of these advantages and more from many sides of the arts world – as a former dancer and dance teacher, and as the current executive director of MST&DA, but also as the mother of two sons who participate in theatre productions.
Let Us Entertain You
The MST&DA community invites you, our Roosevelt Island community, to join us this show season, and show your support for our local theatre and students. Meet our students and their families to hear their experiences.
Our show season kicked off the weekend of March 31, with our Adult Musical Theatre Studio performers in Sondheim on Sondheim. And that was just the beginning.
We have an exciting lineup of shows for all ages.
Improv: April 7, our Family-Friendly Improv performers return for another night of laughs in interactive improv theatre that is great for the whole family.
Teen Theatre: April 28-30, our Teen Theatre students perform the play Almost, Maine, a comedy comprising nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical, almost-town called Almost, Maine.
Children’s Musical Theatre: May 5-8, our Children’s Theatre students perform Seussical Jr. All your favorite Dr. Seuss characters come to life in this fantastical musical.
Teen Musical Theatre: May 19-21, our teens perform again, this time in the musical Pippin. A prince learns the true meaning of glory, love, and war in this iconic musical allegory.
Dance Recitals: June 4, dance students end the show season with their Dance Concert showcase.
