Like last year, two Island organizations will be running youth baseball leagues this spring: the Roosevelt Island Youth Program and the Roosevelt Island Center for Community Development. Both are registering kids now.

With the Youth Operator Request for Proposals (RF) process starting over, we now have an opportunity – and a duty – to honestly discuss what we, as a community, want from our Island’s Youth Center.
At a packed board meeting Thursday, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) voted to give the Roosevelt Island Youth Program (RIYP) $100,000 in funds for the next six-month period.
Anyone dreaming of running the Roosevelt Island Youth Center, located at 506 Main Street, has until November 4 to put together a proposal.
For the past 38 years, the Roosevelt Island Youth program, headed by Executive Director Charles Defino and Director Aikaterini (Katerina) Drougos, has managed the Youth Center on Roosevelt Island. The group also runs the Beacon afterschool program at PS/IS 217 through a contract with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). Although the two programs are considered separate entities, they often function as a single program.
